Program Overview

Parents, we thank you for signing your boys up for K-1 soft lacrosse.  There were 226 boys in the program last year which is a testament to how great the Cougar Lacrosse program is doing.  The boy's high school program is Top 10 in NJ and we look to develop these young boys into fundamentally sound lacrosse players.
Program Goal - Learn the basics of lacrosse.  It is about fun and safety.
Program Style - The K-1 Program is based on the US Lacrosse "soft Lacrosse' program.  If you would like to read more on the format, please go to
Coaching - All volunteer based.  All coaches have received Rutgers University Safety Training and gone through police background checks.
Dates - 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/12 & 5/20
Where - Chatham Middle School (Haas)
Times - Tentative times - Girls K-2 4:45 PM to 5:45 PM and Boys 6 to 7 PM.  This is subject to revision.
First Night -  Please have your son's there 30 minutes prior so we can sign them in and give them their shirts.  Each grade has a distinct colored shirt so we know where the kids are supposed to be on the field.
Parking - Please park in the upper parking lots and walk down.  Do not drive down the side entrance as that is for emergency vehicles.
Communication - Through e-mail and on the internet site,  --  Any changes or cancellations will be posted on the site and sent to you by e-mail.
Bathroom - there is a Port-O-John at the field.  Coaches are not supposed to take your children to the bathroom so please stay during the practice.
Practice - With this many boys, you will see that practice is run like a boot camp.  There will be five sections on the field with a few coaches at each section.  Each section will have a unique drill.  After 12 minutes, the whistle will blow and the children will move clockwise to the next section.
Water Breaks - Unless it is extremely hot, we will not do water breaks.  If we do a water break, the children will drop their sticks so they know where to return to.
Parents - We ask you stay for the entire practice.
Parents Clinic - Tentatively the second Sunday we will host on a side field a parent's clinic during the hour.  We will do this to introduce you to the game, learn how to hold a stick and drills you can do at home with your sons during the week.
Camps - We will send out a list of summer camps.  Chatham Rec will have high quality camps for the boys in July.
Sticks - Please do not use beach sticks.  If you have a question about which stick to buy, please go to Chatham Sports and see Terry.  Terry has the sticks that are geared towards this age group in stock and at great prices.  Please go by late March in case Terry needs to order more.
Equipment - For K-1, only a stick is needed.  We do suggest a mouth guard in order to get the boys used to it.
Second Grade Equipment - Second grade goes to full equipment.  This includes helmet, gloves, arm pads and shoulder pads.   Chatham Sports has a high quality package deal for your son.  Please go to see Terry by March 20th so he can fit your son and order the equipment.  The price is as good as I have seen and I have done a lot of lacrosse shopping to make sure you get the best deal.
Medical Conditions - If your son has a medical condition that requires any close watching, please let me know.  I will be at every practice.  All injuries will be reported and processed according to the rules of Chatham Recreation.  If your son has special needs, please let me know prior and I will make sure that your son is properly taken care of and will enjoy his lacrosse experience.
I am sure I forgot something so if you have any questions please ask.
